Inca Empire Tour

September 2011 16nights / 15 days

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Lima

Your trip starts today in Lima. No activities are planned so you may arrive at any time.
Upon arrival at the hotel, please check for a notice in the lobby from your Tour Leader confirming the
time and place of your tour briefing and any other relevant information.

Please refer to your itinerary for the joining hotel name and address.

Day 2: Lima ( B )

We generally arrange a tour briefing at our hotel first thing in the morning, at around 8.30am. If you are unable to make this meeting, please check at the hotel reception for a message from your tour leader. Your local tour leader will take down the details of your travel insurance.

Today is a free day to explore Peru's capital.Your tour leader is on hand to help you arrange any optional sightseeing tours required.Highly recommended is a visit to the colonial city centre, taking in some of the many excellent museums that house priceless artefacts from the ancient Inca and coastal civilisations.

The desert city of Lima, once deemed ‘La Ciudad de los Reyes’ or ‘The City of Kings’, is a vast buzzing metropolis of over 8 million people. The heart of the city is full with Spanish colonial splendour, fine art and baroque architecture.

Day 3: Cusco ( B )

A short flight across the mountains brings us to Cusco, where we spend the next three days exploring this amazing colonial city and the Sacred Valley.

Established on the foundations of the original Inca town, Cusco is a city of contrasts, both modern and ancient. Known the world over for the incredible archaeological ruins of nearby Machu Picchu, travellers flock to this trekkers haven to soak up its awesome culture and beautiful surroundings.

At an altitude of over 3300 metres Cusco is also a great place to acclimatise in preparation for the hike to Machu Picchu. There is so much to see in and around Cusco. Your tour leader takes you on a walking tour of the central part of town, which includes the impressive Plaza de Armas, the cathedral and the Koricancha
Museum. You also have time to make your own discoveries including travelling out to the great Inca sites of Sacsayhuaman, Quenca and Tambo Machay.

You may also wish to explore further afield into the beautiful Sacred Valley and visit the market town of Pisac. Utilising these two days and your spare day at the end of your trek to Machu Picchu, there is time to take in all these great sites.

Day 4-5: Sacred Valley Cycling Tour - Cusco ( B )

We head up to the surrounding hills and visit the impressive ceremonial ruins of Sacsayhuaman, where huge stone blocks give us an idea of how highly developed the ancient Incas were terms of construction.

From here we start on our cycling tour into the Sacred Valley, an area near Cusco that has been of special significance to the Inca people for centuries.

This valley is located between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo and was the prime agricultural area due to its climate and the fertile land, set against the Urubamba (Sacred) River.

Today we can see evidence of the Inca's engineering skills in the ruins of ancient aqueducts, irrigation canals, dams, terraces and centres of worship dedicated to Pachamama (Mother Earth).

On our two-day cycling tour we are each supplied with a bicycle and cycling helmets, whilst a support vehicle follows behind us. Cycling is a great way to absorb the serenity of the Sacred Valley as we make our way around to the ruins of Qenko, Puka Pukara, Tambo Machay and Ollantytambo. We also spend a night in the peaceful village of Pisac, where we get to wander amidst colonial buildings and colourful market stalls.

Our cycling tour ends upon our return to Cusco.

Day 6-9: Important Note

We trek the ***‘Classic’ and the ‘Lares’*** routes, both of which culminate in a visit to the incredible ruins of Machu Picchu. Although we normally trek the 'Classic' route, it is restricted by the number of trekkers permitted. On the trail each day and unless you have booked early, it maybe difficult or impossible for us to secure the necessary group permits (especially during the peak season).

***It is also closed during the month of February for cleaning and rejuvenation.

***If we are unable to confirm your permit for the 'Classic' route we will use the ‘Lares’ trail.

This is an exceptional alternative. Venturing further off the beaten path, this trek winds its way through remote
rural villages and provides stunning views across the Andes Mountains.

Along the way you can mingle with local families, llama herders and weavers, renowned for their brightly coloured hats and ponchos. The trek is of similar altitude and level of difficulty as the Classic route and also culminates in a visit to the village of Aguas Calientes and the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu, recently voted one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’.

The following description refers to the 'Classic' route. Please refer below to the 'Itinerary Variation' section of this trip note for details of the Lares route.

Day 6: Inca Trail to Yuncachimpa (13km)  ( B , L , D )

We leave Cusco by bus and travel over the mountain range and down into the Urubamba Valley to the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo. Built on a steep mountainside this grand citadel served as both a temple and fortress and is one of the few sites where the Incas were able to defeat the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century.

Their success was however short lived, with the Spaniards returning with force to claim victory. Here we have time to gaze upon the massive Inca fortifications before continuing to Kilometre 82 - the starting point of our trek.

Today is a relatively easy hike past the ancient hilltop fort of Huillca Raccay and the beautiful archaeological site of Llactapata. Along the way there are stunning views of snow-capped Veronica Peak (5860m). Our first camp is just past the village of Wayllabamba at 3000 metres.

Day 7: Inca Trail to Pacaymayo (11 km) ( B, L, D)

Today is the most difficult part of the trek as we climb to Warminwanusca, or ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ (4200m).  This is the first of three Andean high passes we traverse and the highest point on the Inca trail. Stopping to catch our breath we take in the superb panorama of the Vilcanota and Vilcabama mountain ranges,
the ruins of Runkuracay ahead and Rio Pacamayo (Sunrise River) in the valley below. Here the trail changes from dirt to steps and stone pathways. Although not difficult we still need to make a steep descent to the valley below and our camp at Pacamayo (3600m).

Located in a basin beneath the cliff tops, the campsite faces down the valley with a view over the cloud forest.

Day 8: Inca Trail to Winaywayna (15 km) ( B , L, D)

We climb up to the unusual, round ruins of Runcuracay which is believed to have been an Inca tambo or post house. Forging on we continue to climb the Inca staircase and sighting the small mountain lake of Cochapata on the way to  our second pass at 4000m, from where we are rewarded with spectacular views of Pumasillo (6245m) and the entire snow-capped Vilcabamba range From here it is a steep descent to our third pass and the ruins of Sayacmarca,
where we enter the beautiful cloud forest full of orchids, ferns, flowers and hanging moss. The scenery will blow you away!

Butterflies flutter across the trail and the air is pure and clean as we head to the breathtaking Winaywayna, (2450m).

Day 9: Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (5 km) - Cusco (B )

The final leg of the trek to Machu Picchu is the most spectacular of all. We arrive at sunrise at Inti Punku, the Gateway of the Sun, where through a rectangular doorway we experience a panoramic view of Machu Picchu. After taking a short path down, it’s time for us to explore! The secrets of the Incas are slowly revealed to us on a guided tour. For those who have plenty of energy left and who aren’t afraid of heights, there is a climb to Huayna Picchu - a mountain overlooking the site. The view from here is superb! The climb to the top takes up to 90 minutes and care must be taken, especially if the steps are wet.

We depart by catching a bus down to the hot springs at Aguas Calientes and returning to Cusco on a late-afternoon train.

Day 10: Cusco ( B )

A free day in Cusco can be spent shopping for handicrafts or taking in some further sightseeing. Cusco is a maze of markets, artisan shops lining the streets and many museums filled with the rich history of Inca art. You might like to try some traditional cuisine- perhaps guinea pig, alpaca steak or ceviche, a raw seafood
delicacy marinated in lime.

If you haven't yet visited the Sacred Valley, this is your best chance to do so. Your tour leader can advise you on how to get there and show you where the bus to Pisac leaves from.

Alternatively, you may just wish to relax and absorb the incredible experiences of the last few days whilst resting in one of the many cafes that line the streets of this quaint and fascinating town.

Day 11: Cusco - Puno ( B )

After breakfast we transfer to the bus station, where we catch our bus for the magnificent drive over the mountains to Puno. We travel over the Le Raya Pass and make our way across the Altiplano (Spanish for ‘high plain’) to the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Puno lies at an altitude of 3860 metres above sea level and the people of this region are descendants of the Aymara, a strong looking people who once ruled the high plateaus.

According to legend, Puno was the cradle of Inca civilization. Manco Capac, the first Inca, is said to have risen from the waters of Lake Titicaca and under instructions from the Sun God, founded the Inca Empire.

Lake Titicaca at 3815 metres is the world's highest navigable lake and the second largest lake in South America, covering an area of 8400 square kilometres.

Day 12: Lake Titicaca (Amantani Island Homestay) ( B , L, D)

This morning we board our boat and travel across the waters of Lake Titicaca to the floating reed islands inhabited by Uros Indians. We make a brief stop at one of these unusual islands and then continue across the lake to our homestay on beautiful Amantani Island.

This island is more remote than most and not as spoilt as the popular island of Tequile, which has unfortunately felt the heavy impact of tourism.

After arriving in Amantani, our tour leader divides our party up into smaller groups and we move into various family homes for our overnight stay.

Please be warned that the facilities are quite basic.

Many homes have no electricity and the bathroom and toilet facilities are not the best!

Despite this, the homestay experience is sure to be a highlight of our trip to the region and offers great opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges.

Day 13: Puno ( B )

We enjoy breakfast with our host family and then have time to explore the island. There are two mountain peaks on the island that offer excellent hiking opportunities, Pachatata (Father Earth) and Pachamama (Mother Earth). Along the way terraced hillsides with stone walls, grazing alpacas and the national
flower, Cantua, which grows all over the island.

The inhabitants of Amantani Island practise a very traditional lifestyle, free from the luxuries of city living and are also renowned for their handmade textiles and ceramics. In the afternoon we board our boat and leave the terracotta red soils of Amantani Island to cross the deep blue waters back to Puno on the mainland.

Day 14: Puno - Copacabana - La Paz ( B )

Our bus trip to La Paz initially follows the shores of Lake Titicaca to the lakeside town of Copacabana, in Bolivia. A beach resort, Copacabana offers small town charm to go with its proud Indian heritage. We have time to stop for lunch here and enjoy its quaint atmosphere, as well as visit the 17th-century cathedral
that houses the famous statue of the Virgin of Copacabana.

In the afternoon we continue our journey across the Altiplano farmland towards La Paz. On approach, the earth seems to drop away to reveal a giant bowl from which this extraordinary city unfolds beneath you; the view on descent into La Paz is nothing short of ‘jaw-dropping’!

Day 15: La Paz ( B )

The highest capital city in the world, La Paz lies nestled in a steep canyon on the Altiplano, with the towering Mount Illimani forming an impressive backdrop. La Paz is the country’s largest city and home to over half of its indigenous Indian population. It was founded in 1548 following the discovery of gold and although that boom didn’t last long, the city’s location on the main silver route ensured its continued prosperity.

We enjoy free time in La Paz to wander around the cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways that are features of this Andean city. You can also explore the colourful markets, including the famous 'Witches Market', or simply relax in one of the many cafes.

Fitness

Altitude Warning - Inca/Lares Trail

This trip ventures over 3500 metres, so there is a potential risk of being affected by altitude sickness.

Our itinerary has been designed to enable travellers to acclimatise to these altitudes, but it is still possible for you to be affected.
Your alibility to acclimatise has little to do with fitness or health, and most people travel without problems, as long as they take
the time to acclimatise properly.

The wholesaler takes this very seriously; they have over 30 years experience and have one of the best safety records in adventure travel.

Their leaders are experienced trekking guides, and will brief you fully, prior to the start of your trek.
The general consensus is to drink plenty of water as soon as you reach altitude, avoid alcoholic drinks for the few days prior to your trek,
walk slowly rather than hurrying and enjoy the scenery, wear sunglasses during the day, avoid sleep during the day, and wear adequate warm clothing.

When we first arrive at altitude it is common to feel a little short of breath and experience headaches, so it is best not to rush around too much
on your first day. Other symptoms of altitude sickness may include general lethargy and a reduced appetite.

In most cases a good nights sleep and plenty of water will help you feel better.

We recommend that you seek medical advice prior to booking.

In addition, if you plan to take any medications during your trek, you need to TravelManagers know before you depart and it is a good idea to discuss
this with your leader before you begin the trek.

Our itineraries ensure that you have time to acclimatise in Cusco (3249m), before you commence your trek to Machu Picchu.

Most days begin around 7am and you can expect to trek between 5-8 hours for the first three days, with many rest opportunities available.

Day two is generally the longest and most difficult day, as the highest passes are reached on both the Classic Trail (4200m) and Lares Trail (4350m).

You can expect to trek over well defined paths and Inca stone pathways, so properly worn in, waterproof boots are essential.

To prepare for the trek, full day hikes with a weighted pack are a great idea.

Whilst our porters will be carrying your kitbag, you will need to carry your day pack (camera, water, waterproof/windproof jacket & pants, sun cream etc).

Although you may start the day in full sunshine, you can experience rainfall a few hours later, so it is essential to prepare for all kinds of weather.

For those travellers completing the Classic Trail, we recommend taking the stairs as often as possible, leading up to your trek, as this will assist
with the challenging Inca stone pathways. It is also possible to hire trekking poles in Cusco, to assist with your treks (US$5 for 1/ US$10 for 2).

We recommend adjustable, metal poles, with a rubber stop on the end to protect the stone pathways.

Vaccinations

Yellow Fever: This vaccine should be administered at least 10 days prior to travel and must be recorded in an official certificate book.

You maybe asked to produce this certificate by immigration and health officials both whilst travelling overseas and upon your return to your home
country so you must carry this booklet with you at all times.

Other vaccinations may be required or recommended for this trip so you should consult with your travel doctor to obtain the latest up to date information.

Remember, it is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain any vaccinations or preventative medicines for the countries you are visiting –
or any which may be required by your home country upon your return

For travellers from Australia and New Zealand, we recommend the Travel Doctor-TMVC clinics (see www.traveldoctor.com.au or phone 1300 658 844
for an appointment in Australia). Travellers from countries other than Australia and New Zealand should contact similar organisations or their
travel doctor for advice. General health and vaccination information is available to all travellers at
www.traveldoctor.com.au/travelreport. Some vaccines require more than one dose, so arrange for your visit at least 4-6 weeks before you travel.

Important Information

Very Important - Correct Passport Details:

In order to obtain your permit to trek the Inca Trail it is vital that you provide TravelManagers with accurate details of the passport
you will be travelling on in Peru. If you are travelling on a different passport from what is shown on your permit, you will be refused
entry at the entrance to the trail.

Book Early: The Peruvian Government has introduced strict quotas on the number of permits issued for hiking the ‘Classic’ Inca Trail route.

These can often be sold out months in advance. To apply for your group’s permits, we will need your deposit and your passport details,
so we ask that you book your holiday early. In the event that we are unable to obtain permits for the ‘Classic’ route we will use the alternative
'Lares' route, an equally challenging trek culminating in a visit to Machu Picchu.

Public Holiday Inconveniences:

Please be prepared for the inconvenience of sights such as museums and churches being closed to tourists on public holidays
(ie. Christmas Day and New Years Day). Throughout Latin America, quite a few museums are closed on Mondays.

Meals during trek:

Please note that we are unable to cater for those with a gluten intolerance (Coeliac) during the trek.

Food labelling standards vary quite dramatically from country to country so it is not always safe to rely on ingredient labels in another country.
Secondly, due to the remote nature of the trek and available cooking facilities, cross-contamination cannot always be fully avoided.

Typical meals during the trek: Breakfast (toast, fruit salad, ground corn tortillas, vegetable omelette, fried plantains),
Snack (biscuits, tea, pop corn, chocolate bars, hot chocolate), Lunch (Vegetable soups, steamed trout, roast beef, quinoa grained,
mashed or scalloped potatoes), Dinner (Chicken, rice, goulash, rosemary potatoes, chicken wrapped in tomato sauce)

Hotel Breakfasts: Breakfasts in Latin America are simple affairs.

They consist of tea or coffee, fruit juice, bread rolls, butter and jam.
Eggs and fruit are sometimes available on request, for a small charge.

TIPPING

Although the culture of tipping may not be part of your own culture it is nonetheless part of the culture in this
area of the world and it is often the way someone such as a waiter makes a living.

Your tour leader will advise you on this matter, however, as a guideline we would recommend a tip of 10%
In restaurants and US$1-US$2 per person, per day for a local guide.

If you are unhappy with a service you are under no obligation whatsoever to leave a tip.

On many of our group touring trips, your tour leader will discuss with you the idea of running a tipping kitty
whereby everybody contributes an equal amount and then the tour leader pays the tips and keeps a record of all
monies spent (except restaurant tips).

The record can be checked at any time and any money remaining at the end of the tour is returned to group members.
This is often the easiest way to avoid the hassles of needing small change and knowing what is an appropriate
amount to tip.

A tipping kitty is not used in every country in Latin America, however where it is used,we find the above system
is the easiest and fairest method.

The usual amount contributed to the tipping kitty is about US$2-US$3 per person per day.

On the final day of your Inca Trail trek it is customary for the group to make a presentation
to the trekking staff.

As a guideline we would recommend US$10 for each day of the trek (for a total of US$40).

This is a personal way of thanking the porters, cooks and guides for the wonderful service they provide.

*** Alternative Itineraries for this trip - Machu Picchu ***

*** The Lares Trail Trek ***

In the event that trekking permits for the 'Classic' Inca Trail route are unavailable, we will use the 'Lares' route.
The Lares Trail, is an exceptional alternative to the 'Classic' trail. Venturing further off the beaten path, this trek winds its
way through remote rural villages and provides stunning views across the Andes Mountains.

Along the way you can mingle with local families, llama herders and weavers, renowned for their brightly coloured hats and ponchos.

The trek is of similar altitude and level of difficulty as the Classic route and also culminates in a visit to the village of Aguas Calientes
and the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu, recently voted one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’.

Day 1: Lares Trail Trek - Cusco - Calca - Lares Hot Springs – Concany

Following breakfast we leave the cobble stone streets of Cusco behind us. Our bus crosses the mountain range that backdrops
Cusco and descends to the spectacular Sacred Valley. Here we follow the banks of the Urubamba River as it winds its way through the
valley on its journey past Machu Picchu before joining the Apurimac River, one of the upper tributaries of the mighty Amazon.

The Sacred Valley is the breadbasket of the region with its rich soil providing the necessary nutrients for the various crops that grow
both along the valley and on the spectacular terraces, stranded precariously on the sides of the surrounding mountains.

Turning northward again, the road climbs steeply until we arrive at the Lares hot springs, situated some 65km to the north of Cusco and 56km
to the east of Machu Picchu. We have our lunch here and for a small charge (approx $3.50), you can enter the hot thermal pools to enjoy a soak
in the medicinal springs. After lunch we embark on the start of our trek. It is an easy trek to our first campsite at Concany.
Along the way, we will reach a height of 3940m, before descending to the Queullacocha lagoons. Here there are opportunities to spot some of
the Andean wildlife of the region and from Concay you will have magnificent views of Colque Cruz.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 2: Lares Trail Trek - Concany – Epsaycocha Lake

There are great photo opportunities today so keep your camera handy. Having finished breakfast we climb steeply up the valley,
through ancient farmlands, arriving at the community of Huacawasi where some of the finest weavings in Peru are made.

We can observe the skills and brilliant techniques of the weavers as they make their ponchos and other garments.
Passing through the village we begin climbing up to Ipasayqocha, the highest pass on our trek at a height of 4350m.
From here, we have a stunning view of the renowned Mount Veronica (5750m.)
Descending gently we come to the beautiful turquoise Epsaycocha Lake, where we set up camp for the night.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 3: Lares Trail Trek - Willoc - Pumamarka - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

Today our trail leads downhill to the valley below and to the village of Willoc where we have lunch.

From here its another two hours to arrive at Pumamarka where we enjoy the Inca terraces before finally arriving at the ancient town of
Ollantaytambo. Situated in a fertile river valley and sheltered by mammoth mountains, this ancient Inca village is considered one of the
most important living museums in the world and displays the sophisticated urban planning and engineering of the Incas.

There is also a wide variety of flowers and birds species to be enjoyed this day.

In the late afternoon we board the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu.

Here we spend the night in a comfortable hostel.

Make sure during your stay in this ‘town at the end of the railway’ that you take a dip in the hot thermal springs that give the town its name.
They are open from 5am to 10pm and towels can be hired at the entrance for a small fee.

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 4: Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Cusco

After an early breakfast, we take the first bus up the steep zig zagging road to the entrance of the ruins of Machu Picchu.
By leaving early we avoid the large crowds that arrive from Cusco later in the morning.

Entering into the archaeological sight we now have a fully guided tour of this ancient and mystical Inca city.

Before taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, there is free time to explore the ruins at your own pace, soaking in the atmosphere.
For the adventurous, you can climb to the top of Huayna Picchu, where you have the opportunity to see Machu Picchu from a unique vantage point.

You can also make the short hike up to the Sun Gate for that classic photo of Machu Picchu.

In the afternoon we descend once again to Aguas Calientes where we can take our lunch before catching the late afternoon train back to Cusco.
